Main Stream media, Fox 5 News, South-South News, Media Global and a number of representatives from other media channels covered the event, highlighting Sri Lanka’s uniquely distinct culture and gastronomic delights to the world. Speaking to Fox 5, Ambassador Dr. Palitha Kohona, stated:
“Today we celebrate 64 years of independence from British Colonial rule. We have achieved much in these 64 years. A free education system has ensured a 96% literacy rate. A free healthcare system has resulted in a very low infant mortality rate. Today we are recovering from a 27 year long conflict. The economy is booming, tourism has rebounded and FDI has picked up substantially. The country led by President Rajapaksa, is brimming with confidence. The government is determined to ensure that all Sri Lankans share in the prosperity”

Sri Lanka received its Independence on February 4th, 1948 after 133 years of British colonial rule. A documentary on Sri Lanka’s Gem industry along with a film of her struggle for independence was also screened at the event.
