Model United Nations 2010

In March 03, 2010, 722 students from US schools gathered in New York City for the fourth  Model United Nations programme (MMUN 2010).  The goal of the model UN is to explore how they could have a voice on world issues such as peace, non-violence, the environment   and social justice.  This programme is a fascinating 'going out' exercise for school children, aged 9 to 15 years. Introduced twenty-five years ago, many Model UN programmes for high school and university students are held annually.
The children learnt about the UN and its sixty-year evolution encouraging greater dialogue and cooperation among the 192 member countries. Each class represented a country.
Sri Lanka’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Dr. Palitha Kohona was the key note speaker. He spoke about Sri Lanka and its role in the UN and a film about Sri Lanka, its history, religious, culture, tourism and life style was screened at the event.
The model UN programme gives Sri Lankan students an opportunity to become more involved with the United Nations. The Sri Lanka Mission to UN in New York is in a position to provide more information on this programme.
