ASSISTANCE FOR FLOOD AFFECTED PEOPLE IN SRI LANKA

The Secretary/Disaster Management has informed the Ministry that at the start of this week, over a million people were affected due to floods and landslides, with around 284,000 housed in welfare centres. Ampara and Batticaloa are the worst affected Districts. As the rainfall continued for over 3 weeks, there has been serious damage to the livelihood activities as well.

Those affected are in immediate need of tents, roofing sheets, mats, mattresses, bed sheets and linen, clothing and dry rations. Additionally, the Ministry of Disaster Management needs to hire excavation machinery for the cleaning of the irrigation tanks etc.

It is in this context that the Ministry of Disaster Management is soliciting financial assistance. Your taking action to mobilize such assistance, including through the Sri Lankan community in your country/countries of accreditation, would be greatly appreciated.

The financial contributions should be directed to Bank Account No 0007040166 of the Ministry of Disaster Management at teh Bank of Ceylon, Torrington Square Branch.
