Hon. Basil Rajapaksa, M.P., Senior Presidential Advisor met with UN Secretary General Mr. Ban Ki-moon today. He briefed Secretary General on humanitarian measures taken by the Government and specific measures taken to protect civilians in the face of continued defiance by the LTTE of the calls by the Government and the Untied Nations to allow the people to move into the cleared areas. The LTTE defiance is a matter of concern to the Government. He also reiterated H.E. the President’s commitment to pursue the political process through a democratic electoral means. He discussed UN assistance in the post-conflict period for de-mining and socio economic development. Secretary General shared concern over civilians and expressed appreciation for Government’s cooperation. He assured UN support for civilian protection, humanitarian work and post-conflict development.
