US Congressman Shuler hopes for greater US engagement with Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka and the United States share long historical ties and numerous bilateral co-operative efforts spanning the full gamut of disciplines, ranging from strong trade relations to countering terrorism, observed Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama when US Democratic party Congressman Heath Shuler who is on a three day visit to Sri Lanka, called on him last Tuesday (26 May 2009). The Minister appreciated the support of the US government in Sri Lanka’s long fight against terrorism, including the assistance rendered by them in stemming illegal fund raising and money laundering by the LTTE front organizations in the USA. Poland and Sri Lanka agree to expand bilateral relations

With the defeat of terrorism, the time is opportune to enhance relations between Sri Lanka and Poland observed Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama when Prof. Piotr Klodkowski, Ambassador of the Republic of Poland paid a courtesy call on the Minister last Tuesday (26 May 2009) following his presentation of credentials to H.E. the President earlier in the day. The Minister pointed out that Poland must reflect on the present Sri Lankan agenda which could be enhanced through economic diplomacy and in this context outlined the need for working towards developing the tea trade, tourism and the technological field especially in IT. Further, the Minister stated that Poland could cooperate with Sri Lanka in providing facilities to the IDPs for which the government was following an action plan.

At the invitation of the H.E. Mahinda Rajapaksa, President of Sri Lanka, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, H.E. Ban Ki-moon paid a visit to Sri Lanka.  During the course of his visit, he held talks with the President, Foreign Minister as well as other senior leaders of Sri Lanka.    During his stay, he also consulted other relevant stakeholders, members of the international humanitarian agencies and civil society.  The Secretary-General visited the IDP sites at Vavuniya and overflew the conflict area, near Mullaitivu that was the scene of the conflict.

Foreign Minister appreciates Japan’s continued support for IDP relief

Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama at a meeting last Saturday (02nd May 2009) with Japan's Representative for Peace Building to Sri Lanka, Ambassador Yasushi Akashi, stated that Sri Lanka is encouraged by Japan’s continued interest in seeing the establishment of peace in Sri Lanka and its continued constructive engagement in Sri Lanka.  The Japanese Special Envoy was in Sri Lanka on a three-day visit last week to meet Government leaders and officials. Pointing out that Sri Lanka is on the threshold of defeating terrorism unleashed by the LTTE, the Foreign Minister stated that the next phase in this aspect is post-conflict rehabilitation, reconstruction and rebuilding for ‘sustainable development’ in bringing about lasting peace for the people of Sri Lanka.  He expressed Sri Lanka's appreciation for Japan’s continued support for the immediate needs of the IDPs and for post conflict development efforts in the country.

FM hails victory at Human Rights Council

Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama has hailed Sri Lanka’s resounding victory at the Special Session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva yesterday (27 May 2009), calling it “an unambiguous and emphatic endorsement by the international community of the Sri Lankan Government’s strategy to defeat terrorism and its pursuit of peace and reconciliation within the framework of a Sri Lankan agenda, as embodied in the Mahinda Chinthana,”. He said that this victory is a tribute by the world at large to the wise leadership of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who has succeeded in steering the country out of turbulent waters into an era of lasting peace and prosperity.

'I'll return to a country free of terrorism' says President Rajapaksa
"Our economic prosperity must essentially rest upon global peace and stability. Terrorism has for decades denied us this right. All eleven countries gathered here today have suffered the effects of terrorism, some more than others. Terrorism has raised its ugly head in different forms from time to time and destroyed all development initiatives in most of our countries", said H.E the President addressing the G-11 Summit at Jordan today (May 16).

Sri Lanka calls for punitive measures against the LTTE’s international network

Foreign Minister, Rohitha Bogollagama stated that more pressure must be brought upon the LTTE by the international community, including punitive measures on its international network present in the UK, when a delegation comprising a  cross-party group of Members of Parliament from the United Kingdom called on him at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday (05 May 2009). He cautioned MPs to carefully evaluate their participation in events and programmes organized by LTTE front organizations, as it only leads to these operatives to seek legitimacy purporting to be endorsement with such presence.

FM expects visit of Canadian Minister to strengthen bilateral ties

Sri Lanka and Canada enjoy a longstanding and multi-faceted relationship, which has been strengthened through their common membership of the Colombo Plan, the Commonwealth and the United Nations System. Sri Lanka greatly appreciates Canada’s support in its counter-terrorism efforts, notably by its proscription of the LTTE in 2006, as well as the subsequent listing of front organizations of the LTTE. The people of Sri Lanka also recall with gratitude and affection, the spontaneous and generous assistance provided by the Canadian Government and people in the aftermath of the tsunami disaster which struck Sri Lanka in December 2004. Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama made these remarks while welcoming the Minister of International Co-operation of Canada, Beverley J. Oda, who is on a brief official visit to Sri Lanka, at the Foreign Ministry today (04 May 2009). He also thanked the Canadian Minister for the large scale development assistance provided to Sri Lanka, over the years.
