The Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau has appointed Mr. Dillan Ariyawansa as Representative for Sri Lanka Tourism in the USA. In this capacity, Mr. Ariyawansa will spearhead marketing and promotion of Sri Lanka as a tourist destination.
Mr. Ariyawansa is currently Senior Vice President, USA, Canada and Caribbean of Sri Lankan Airlines.

This is a momentous phase for the Tourism Industry. With terrorism defeated after three decades, our people can now travel freely in our motherland. Tourists should have no fear to visit our attractions. And, I believe, we have ended the need for Travel Advisories that crippled Tourism, said President Mahinda Rajapaksa in an address to the launch of the new image of Sri Lanka Tourism.

The President of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed accompanied by a high level delegation visited Sri Lanka from 18 -19 June 2009.
During the visit, President Nasheed met with President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the President’s House in Anuradhapura today (19 June 2009) and discussed a wide range of issues of both bilateral and regional interests.

Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama, commenting on the elimination of LTTE terrorism, says that Sri Lanka is now wide open for democracy with peace returning to the country almost after three decades. The Minister also added that the international community should be happy with the manner terrorism was rooted out from the island nation. |

A Workshop on the Implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1540 dealing with Non-State Actors and Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) will be held in Sri Lanka from 23 - 25 June 2009. The Workshop is being organized by Sri Lanka and the United States in cooperation with the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs. Participants from the Government of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka have been invited to attend as well as representatives of UN Agencies, regional and the other international and inter-governmental organizations.

In conducting military operations to eliminate terrorism, the Government’s primary concern was to safeguard the innocent civilians, many of whom had experienced multiple displacements over the years, and had their children forcibly conscripted by the LTTE to be used as cannon fodder. Many of them had lost one or more of their family members. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka, Rohitha Bogollagama, is currently attending the 8th Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore. The Shangri-La Dialogue is a high-profile global conference, primarily focusing on security and security related aspects and is participated by Ministers of Defence, Ministers of Foreign Affairs, military strategists and top brass, academia, diplomatic corps, think-tanks and senior bureaucrats from world over. Sri Lanka is participating at this three day Conference for the 3rd consecutive year.
