The LTTE is the most brutal terror outfit the world has ever seen, and defeating them requires global support. What Sri Lanka is doing, is fighting this terror outfit single handed, to ensure that democracy and respect for human life prevail in the world, said President Mahinda Rajapaksa when he addressed the Oxford Union yesterday (13).
“I must add that what I am doing is in no way different to what other democracies have done before, and continue to do in the face of terrorism. If we fail in our war against the LTTE, the world will fail in its fight against terrorism, and democracy will be the victim. This is the plain truth,” the President said.
The President, in his address, outlined the key characteristics of the holistic development strategy pursued by the Government, especially in empowering the rural areas where the vast majority of the Sri Lankan people live.
“Our development thrust unfortunately has had its own obstacles, the main being the brutal terrorist threat that makes us, a developing country, to take a heavy toll. It is time that the world, raising its united voice, expressed its utter revulsion of the barbaric practice of suicide bombings. It must be made absolutely clear that this form of political expression, if it could be described as such, is utterly unacceptable in the civilized world,” the President added. |

We know that agriculture and the abundance it creates gave birth to the New Year. The Government has during the period that has elapsed devoted much to ensure the prosperity of the land through the empowerment of agriculture. We know that the nation has reaped a harvest of excellent achievements. Hence, it is comforting that this New Year has dawned at a time when the nation is conscious of its dignity.
It is also most fortunate to see the people of the East, who were oppressed by terrorism for over two decades, enjoying the New Year happily with their families. It is my conviction that we would be strengthened by engaging in New Year traditions and customs as one nation. |

Addressing a Security Council meeting on Small Arms, Sri Lanka's Ambassador to the UN Prasad Kariayawasam said that Sri Lanka, like several other countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America, suffers from violence and terrorism perpetrated by a non-state actor using ill-gotten small arms and light weapons, as well as ammunition. This terrorist group wreaks havoc in some parts of the country and their campaign of terror has continued unabated, despite all efforts by the Government to seek a solution to the conflict by political means of dialogue and democratic accommodation.
