Late President Wijetunga was the Head of the State of Sri Lanka from May 1, 1993 to November 12, 1994. A Book of Condolence will be open at the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka on 25th September 2008 from 10 am to 4 pm.

It is with great distress that the Government and People of Sri Lanka have learned about series of terrorist bomb attacks in New Delhi last night resulting in loss of life and injury to innocent people. Sri Lanka unequivocally condemns such barbaric acts of terrorism which can never be justified under any circumstance for whatever reason.

The Secretary General of SAARC, Dr. Sheel Kant Sharma, who is on a special visit to Sri Lanka at the invitation of Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama, called on him at the Ministry on 11 September 2008. The Minister discussed with Dr. Sharma the work ahead for Sri Lanka, as the SAARC Chair and the modalities by which the decisions taken at the recently concluded 15th Colombo Summit are to be implemented.

Foreign Minister Bogollagama highlights Sri Lanka’s people-centric Foreign Policy

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Rohitha Bogollagama has emphasized the need for diplomats who are posted abroad to represent Sri Lanka, to have a thorough knowledge of the country’s system of local administration and the day to day problems confronting the people.  Hence, he has decided that all Heads of Mission and Foreign Service officers should serve a period of orientation attached to a District Secretariat, prior to their departure, in order to gain an understanding of the range of services provided by the Government to the people at the grassroots level including Samurdhi welfare, and various development programmes initiated by the Government.
