Minister of Foreign Affairs, Rohitha Bogollagama emphasized the need for a time bound approach to facilitate Fiji’s return to democratic rule, while addressing the 30th meeting of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) held in New York last Saturday (27 September 2008). The Minister referred to the Commonwealth stipulated deadline of March 2009 for elections to be held in order that a democratically elected government could be established. He further observed that in the event this condition was not fulfilled, the Commonwealth would have to consider further action after taking ground realities into account and apply the Millbrook Plan of Action.

Participating on behalf of President Mahinda Rajapaksa in the interactive Round Table discussions segment of the high level meeting on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) held on the fringes of the UN General Assembly sessions in New York last Saturday (27 September 2008), Minister of Foreign Affairs, Rohitha Bogollagama said that Sri Lanka is on track to achieve the MDGs by 2015, which has been facilitated by re-structuring the country’s socio-economic fundamentals, in keeping with the aspirations of the people.

Foreign Minister Bogollagama was emphatic on the maintenance of Sri Lanka's territorial integrity, an aspect the international community must consistently respect and underscored the need for security for liberty to exist, when he met Moroccan Foreign Minister Taieb Fassi Fihri today (26 September 2008 ) at the UN Headquarters in New York. His Moroccan counterpart concurring with Minister Bogollagama's view, stated that Morocco is faced with similar challenges as Sri Lanka in respect to its territorial integrity and his Government is strongly in solidarity with the Government and the people of Sri Lanka.

Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama has called on the Commonwealth to move forward to evolve more practical measures to combat terrorism and draw from its wealth of experience to enhance the Commonwealth Plan of Action on Terrorism. He made this call in his intervention during the Commonwealth Foreign Ministers’ meeting held today (24th September 2008) in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. Speaking further, he said that it is for this purpose that Sri Lanka had proposed at the last CHOGM in Kampala to convene a Commonwealth Ministerial Conference on Terrorism in Colombo. The Minister suggested that the meeting be held at the level of Home/Interior Ministers.
