Palestine to support entry of Sri Lanka to the OIC as an Observer

Palestinian Foreign Minister, Dr Riad al Malki met his Sri Lankan counterpart Rohitha Bogollagama today (10th October 2008) at the Foreign Ministry for official talks. During the discussions, he conveyed the readiness of the Palestinian President, Dr. Mahmoud Abbas to support Sri Lanka's application for entry into the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) as an Observer.

As you will no doubt be aware, my country, Sri Lanka, has had a very long and constructive relationship with UNHCR: we are partners in the true sense, UNHCR in Sri Lanka has supported the government and complemented our own efforts to assist the citizens of our country who have been displaced – both due to the conflict that has blotted our socio-political landscape for over two decades, and disasters such as the Indian Ocean tsunami that struck our shores in December 2004, leaving chaos and sheer destruction in its aftermath. I would therefore like to take this opportunity to thank UNHCR in particular High Commissioner Guterres for his continued support.

   Sri Lanka is keen to assist the new government of Nepal by  sharing its expertise in the fields of health, education and investment promotion stated Rohitha Bogollagama, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka when he met Nepal’s recently appointed Foreign Minister Upendra Yadav today (29th) in New York.  Minister Bogollagama on inquiry elaborated the workings of Sri Lanka’s Board of Investment which he pointed out to be an autonomous body and a one-stop shop for facilitating investments to Sri Lanka.  In this regard, he invited the Nepalese Government to study the legal provisions on which  the BOI had been established.

Foreign Minister hails entry of Karuna into Parliament

Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama has welcomed the appointment of Mr. Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan, also known as “Karuna“ as a Member of Parliament, calling it an epoch making event which would go down in the annals of Sri Lankan history, signifying the culmination of the metamorphosis of a member of the LTTE, who was previously committed to the dismemberment of the Sri Lankan State, renouncing violence and embracing democracy.

Minister Bogollagama accuses LTTE of persistent recruitment of child soldiers

Participating in the Ministerial meeting in New York today (26 September 2008) on the follow up to the Paris Principles relating to children associated with armed forces and groups, Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama stated that the LTTE known as a ruthless terrorist organization operating in Sri Lanka, has been identified by the UN as a persistent violator of basic human rights, through its recruitment of child combatants throughout the period of the conflict. He elaborated that over 60% percent of the LTTE cadres have been children both boys and girls and according to the UNICEF 6,273 children have been recruited since 2002.
