Sri Lanka’s Presidential Election 2010

The Presidential Election was successfully concluded in Sri Lanka on 26th January 2010 and incumbent President Mahinda Rajapaksa of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) was re-elected for a second term securing 57.88% of the total votes cast.  His closest rival at the elections, Mr. Sarath Fonseka, representing a coalition of opposition parties, including the main opposition UNP, secured 40.15% of the total votes cast.

Mr. President,
Permit me at the outset to congratulate you on your assumption of the Presidency of the Security Council and also extend our felicitations to Brazil, Lebanon, Gabon, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Nigeria on their election to this Council.   We also wish to thank the Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs for his briefing.  My delegation appreciates the opportunity given to us to once again to focus on the situation in the Middle East, particularly, the Palestinian question.

Co Chair of UN Working Group

Ambassador Dr Palitha Kohona, Sri Lanka’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York has been appointed Co Chairperson of the UN Working Group to study issues relating  to the Conservation and Sustainable Use of the Marine Biological Diversity beyond areas of national jurisdiction by the President of the UN General Assembly.  The other Co Chair is Dr. Liesdeth Lijnzaad, Legal Advisor of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands.

SRI LANKAN ARTISTES HONOURED AT GALA CONCERT
HOSTED BY THE SRI LANKA MISSION in NY TO MARK NATIONAL DAY

The Permanent Representative Dr Palitha Kohona and the Sri Lanka Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York hosted a gala concert for 350 guests at the prestigious Asia Society on Park Avenue to mark the National Day featuring some of Sri Lanka's best talent in America. The concert featured Rohan De Silva, Pianist and Maestro of Chamber Music who has played at the White House and at Carnegie Hall, young Soprano Ms Tharanga Goonetillake who is a gem in the New York’s Opera Circuit, Veteran Jazz Vocalist Yolande Bawan dubbed as the new Ella Fitzgerald, Pradeep Ratnayake, Sri Lanka’s outstanding Sitarist, Jazz Pianist Prodigy Dinuk Wijeratne. The Channa Upuli Dance Troupe added luster to the event with its splendid dance display. "Dr Kohona, in his welcoming address said "It is doubly a joy to host this event as we as a nation emerge from our long nightmare of internal conflict and as we congratulate President Mahinda Rajapaksa on his emphatic victory at last week's Presidential elections. Against the backdrop of a long awaited peace, the nation's pent up dreams and aspirations of a better future for all its citizens are reflected in the music of the artistes performing today."

My Delegation wishes to congratulate the Co Chairs of the Working Group, Ms. Lispeth Lijhnstead (Netherlands) and Ambassador Palitha Kohona, (Sri Lanka) on their appointment and to extend our appreciation to them for undertaking to guide our deliberations in formulating viable and generally acceptable recommendations to be provided to the General Assembly at its 65th Session. We would also express appreciation to the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea of the OLA for the report of the SG in document A/64/66/Add 2 and for its support in preparing for and servicing this meeting.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa won a historic and resounding victory in the Presidential Election held yesterday (26), the first free and fair election in which the entire country could participate  in nearly three decades, and also the first such election since the defeat of terrorism in Sri Lanka in May last year.
