Foreign Minister, Rohitha Bogollagama stated that more pressure must be brought upon the LTTE by the international community, including punitive measures on its international network present in the UK, when a delegation comprising a cross-party group of Members of Parliament from the United Kingdom called on him at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday (05 May 2009). He cautioned MPs to carefully evaluate their participation in events and programmes organized by LTTE front organizations, as it only leads to these operatives to seek legitimacy purporting to be endorsement with such presence. |

Sri Lanka and Canada enjoy a longstanding and multi-faceted relationship, which has been strengthened through their common membership of the Colombo Plan, the Commonwealth and the United Nations System. Sri Lanka greatly appreciates Canada’s support in its counter-terrorism efforts, notably by its proscription of the LTTE in 2006, as well as the subsequent listing of front organizations of the LTTE. The people of Sri Lanka also recall with gratitude and affection, the spontaneous and generous assistance provided by the Canadian Government and people in the aftermath of the tsunami disaster which struck Sri Lanka in December 2004. Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama made these remarks while welcoming the Minister of International Co-operation of Canada, Beverley J. Oda, who is on a brief official visit to Sri Lanka, at the Foreign Ministry today (04 May 2009). He also thanked the Canadian Minister for the large scale development assistance provided to Sri Lanka, over the years. |

Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama outlined to David Miliband, Secretary of State for Foreign & Commonwealth Affairs of the UK when they spoke today (27/4/2009) that the foremost priority of the Sri Lanka Government is to ensure the safety of civilians entrapped in the North, and combat operations had reached its conclusion. The telephone call was initiated by Foreign Secretary Miliband. Minister Bogollagama explained that the security forces hitherto had been engaged in a rescue mission of the entrapped civilians and would continue to do so since the LTTE had not made any attempts to release the persons being held hostage. |

The United Nations Under Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Sir John Holmes visited Sri Lanka on 26th and 27th of April on the invitation of the Government. During his visit, Sir John Holmes had discussions with President Mahinda Rajapaksa Foreign Minster Rohitha Bogollagama, Minister of Disaster Management and Human Rights, Mr. Mahinda Samarasinghe and several other senior officials. He also visited the relief centres accommodating displaced people in Vavuniya and the Omanthai transit point where displaced persons escaping from the LTTE are received by the GOSL. Sir John Holmes’s visit took place against the background of the humanitarian operations launched by the Sri Lankan Security Forces which recently resulted in the liberation of approximately 110,000 civilians. |

Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama at a meeting last Saturday (02nd May 2009) with Japan's Representative for Peace Building to Sri Lanka, Ambassador Yasushi Akashi, stated that Sri Lanka is encouraged by Japan’s continued interest in seeing the establishment of peace in Sri Lanka and its continued constructive engagement in Sri Lanka. The Japanese Special Envoy was in Sri Lanka on a three-day visit last week to meet Government leaders and officials. Pointing out that Sri Lanka is on the threshold of defeating terrorism unleashed by the LTTE, the Foreign Minister stated that the next phase in this aspect is post-conflict rehabilitation, reconstruction and rebuilding for ‘sustainable development’ in bringing about lasting peace for the people of Sri Lanka. He expressed Sri Lanka's appreciation for Japan’s continued support for the immediate needs of the IDPs and for post conflict development efforts in the country. |

Responding to a call to the international community made yesterday by Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama for emergency relief assistance for the large number of civilians who have fled LTTE control and sought sanctuary in the cleared areas in recent days,the French Foreign Minister,Dr Bernard Kouchner telephoned his Sri Lankan counterpart today(24th April 2009) and informed that the Government of France will be providing a fully equipped 100-bed field hospital, backed by a 75 strong medical and support staff immediately.In this regard,an advance team will arrive in Colombo tomorrow to make a field assessment to locate the hospital facility in the Vavuniya district |
