In conducting military operations to eliminate terrorism, the Government’s primary concern was to safeguard the innocent civilians, many of whom had experienced multiple displacements over the years, and had their children forcibly conscripted by the LTTE to be used as cannon fodder. Many of them had lost one or more of their family members. Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama made these observations, while addressing the final day session of the 8th Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore today (31 May 2009). |

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka, Rohitha Bogollagama, is currently attending the 8th Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore. The Shangri-La Dialogue is a high-profile global conference, primarily focusing on security and security related aspects and is participated by Ministers of Defence, Ministers of Foreign Affairs, military strategists and top brass, academia, diplomatic corps, think-tanks and senior bureaucrats from world over. Sri Lanka is participating at this three day Conference for the 3rd consecutive year. The fundamental objectives of this event are to assess and deliberate on new developments and dynamics in the realm of global and regional security.

With the defeat of terrorism, the time is opportune to enhance relations between Sri Lanka and Poland observed Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama when Prof. Piotr Klodkowski, Ambassador of the Republic of Poland paid a courtesy call on the Minister last Tuesday (26 May 2009) following his presentation of credentials to H.E. the President earlier in the day. The Minister pointed out that Poland must reflect on the present Sri Lankan agenda which could be enhanced through economic diplomacy and in this context outlined the need for working towards developing the tea trade, tourism and the technological field especially in IT. Further, the Minister stated that Poland could cooperate with Sri Lanka in providing facilities to the IDPs for which the government was following an action plan. |

At the invitation of the H.E. Mahinda Rajapaksa, President of Sri Lanka, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, H.E. Ban Ki-moon paid a visit to Sri Lanka. During the course of his visit, he held talks with the President, Foreign Minister as well as other senior leaders of Sri Lanka. During his stay, he also consulted other relevant stakeholders, members of the international humanitarian agencies and civil society. The Secretary-General visited the IDP sites at Vavuniya and overflew the conflict area, near Mullaitivu that was the scene of the conflict. |

Sri Lanka and the United States share long historical ties and numerous bilateral co-operative efforts spanning the full gamut of disciplines, ranging from strong trade relations to countering terrorism, observed Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama when US Democratic party Congressman Heath Shuler who is on a three day visit to Sri Lanka, called on him last Tuesday (26 May 2009). The Minister appreciated the support of the US government in Sri Lanka’s long fight against terrorism, including the assistance rendered by them in stemming illegal fund raising and money laundering by the LTTE front organizations in the USA. Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama has hailed Sri Lanka’s resounding victory at the Special Session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva yesterday (27 May 2009), calling it “an unambiguous and emphatic endorsement by the international community of the Sri Lankan Government’s strategy to defeat terrorism and its pursuit of peace and reconciliation within the framework of a Sri Lankan agenda, as embodied in the Mahinda Chinthana,”. He said that this victory is a tribute by the world at large to the wise leadership of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who has succeeded in steering the country out of turbulent waters into an era of lasting peace and prosperity.
