My delegation wishes to express its appreciation to Brazil for initiating this Resolution on “Humanitarian Assistance for Haiti” which we have unanimously adopted today and we are pleased to have joined the list of co sponsors.  We also thank the Secretary-General and the Permanent Representative of Haiti for updating us today on the relief efforts.

Co Chair of UN Working Group

Ambassador Dr Palitha Kohona, Sri Lanka’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York has been appointed Co Chairperson of the UN Working Group to study issues relating  to the Conservation and Sustainable Use of the Marine Biological Diversity beyond areas of national jurisdiction by the President of the UN General Assembly.  The other Co Chair is Dr. Liesdeth Lijnzaad, Legal Advisor of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands.

The “Elders” Statement on  IDPs in Sri Lanka -
Sadly outdated and Inaccurate

 The Elders Foundation, based in London, has issued an unfortunate statement dated 26.11.2009 containing highly inaccurate and outdated information on the IDP situation in Sri Lanka.  It is sad that respected group of eminent Elders, including its Chair Archbishop Tutu, has endorsed such a statement.
