The Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in New York hosts UN Youth Delegates in preparation for the World Conference on Youth 2014

The Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations hosted a stakeholder meeting for UN Youth Delegates to the 68th United Nations General Assembly in preparation for the World Conference on Youth (WCY) in 2014 in Sri Lanka. Delegates from several countries, including Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Georgia, Romania, Finland, India, Venezuela, Norway, Poland, Germany, South Korea, Bulgaria and Slovakia attended. Representatives of the UN DESA and UN HABITAT were present.
Addressing the gathering, The Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations, Dr. Palitha Kohona reflected broadly on youth leadership and stressed the importance of youth integrating the MDGs and the Sustainable Development Goals, into their discussions. Dr. Kohona also spoke on Sri Lanka’s efforts to integrate youth in the country’s development processes, including through the National Youth Parliament. Ambassador Kohona highlighted the WCY 2014 as a unique platform for mainstreaming youth concerns in the formulation and implementation of the post-2015 development agenda. He also highlighted to engage more developing country participation. He outlined Sri Lanka’s high achievements in the educational and health sectors, and gender parity.
Mr. Adhil Bakeer Markar and Ms. Chapa Perera, the two official UN Youth Delegates from Sri Lanka facilitated the discussions. Mr. Ravi Karkara, Global Youth Advisor to the WCY 2014 and Mr. Waruna Sri Dhanapala, Minister Counsellor of the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations also spoke. The Deputy Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka Ambassador Major General Shavendra Silva was present. The discussions also included and Q & A session.
The meeting was one in a series of events hosted by the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in New York to engage with global youth in preparing for the WCY 2014. A Stakeholder meeting chaired by the Ministers of External Affairs and Youth Affairs and Skills Development to develop the agenda of the WCY 2014 was held on September 27, 2013 at the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the UN.
