People in East receive new health facilities from UNICEF

United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has built a new maternity and paediatric ward complex and established Regional Medical Supplies Division (RMSD) for the benefit of the people living in the Eastern Province. Government committed to looking after its people in the Vanni

At Friday’s [15 August 2008] high level policy meeting of the Consultative Committee on Humanitarian Assistance [CCHA], the Chair Mahinda Samarasinghe, Minister of Disaster Management and Human Rights and Hon. Basil Rajapaksa, M.P. Senior Advisor to H.E. the President, addressed humanitarian issues faced by the people of the Vanni. While reiterating the continuous commitment of the Government of Sri Lanka (GoSL) in providing humanitarian assistance to its people in the Vanni; Minister Samarasinghe and Hon. Basil Rajapaksa, M.P requested the Government Agents of Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Mannar and Vavuniya to present the current situation in order for immediate assistance to be provided.

Government ready to assist civilians fleeing fighting in the Wanni

The Government is committed to assisting civilians who may be displaced by the ongoing counter LTTE military operations in the North and reiterates its firm commitment to continue providing humanitarian assistance to the people in the Wanni. Urgent measures have been taken to provide adequate food and shelter to the displaced people and additional facilities are being constructed in Government controlled areas. Sri Lanka is a unique case of a government maintaining its offices and funding the administration in territories unlawfully occupied by a terrorist group.

Ambassador H.M.G.S. Palihakkara takes over Head of Mission of Sri Lanka’s UN Representation in New York

Former Foreign Secretary of Sri Lanka, Ambassador Palihakkara, has arrived in New York, succeeding Ambassador Prasad Kariyawasam as the new Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations. He will formally assume duties after presenting credential to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon later this month. Ambassador Kariyawasam is now back in the Ministry holding a senior position as Additional Foreign Secretary.

Let me thank you, Mr. President, for convening this debate. Sri Lanka is particularly pleased to take the floor on this important issue under the guidance of the delegation of Vietnam.

This meeting provides an opportunity to refocus our efforts in addressing the scourge of recruitment and use of child combatants. The reports of the Secretary-General on specific situations, as well as his Annual Report, S/2007/757 are informative and illustrative in this regard.
