Friday, 02 January 2009 13:03
Sri Lanka security forces have taken full control of the town of Kilinochchi, in the North of Sri Lanka today, President Mahinda Rajapaksa announced to the Nation. Paying tribute and gratitude to the forces, the President said “The time is not very far when the people of the north who have been held hostage by the LTTE for several decades will be able to enjoy the freedom that is their right. As the Head of State of Sri Lanka I give you my pledge today, that not only shall we accept the responsibility to ensure your own security and freedom, but the future security and freedom of your children, too.”  The President also stated that “one must not belittle this victory as one that has been won by one community over another. It should not be interpreted as defeat of the North by the South. This is a victory for our entire nation and country. It is a decisive victory over savage terrorism that was playing around with the blood, muscle and sinews of humans. It is a victory over venomous separatism that sought to divide people on grounds of race and religion.”

New Year Message of Hon. Minister of Foreign Affairs
Thursday, 01 January 2009 08:30

In Sinhala    In Tamil

I have great pleasure in sending this message to all Sri Lankans at home and abroad on the happy occasion of the dawn of the New Year - 2009.

The past year has been quite significant in raising Sri Lanka's international profile. The notable highlight of our successful diplomacy was the hosting of the 15th SAARC Summit in Colombo, with the participation of 8 Heads of State or Government and 7 Observers. The assumption of the SAARC Chair has imposed a heavy responsibility on Sri Lanka. However, Sri Lanka under the dynamic leadership of President Mahinda Rajapaksa will be equal to the task of discharging its responsibilities for the greater benefit and welfare of the peoples of the SAARC region in the coming year.

Wednesday, 10 December 2008 09:53
We in Sri Lanka renew and reaffirm our committed to upholding the values and goals proclaimed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which also requires the elimination of terrorism in all its forms, ranking high among the threats to all civilized society”, states President Mahinda Rajapaksa in his message to mark the 60thn anniversary of the proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

As we mark this 60th anniversary of the UDHR there is the pressing need for all nations to join in concerted action to eradicate the menace of terrorism from our midst, having seen for ourselves in no small measure how it can undermine the very values upheld by this Declaration. Message from Hon. Prime Minister on the occasion of the Commemoration of SAARC Charter Day
Monday, 08 December 2008 08:04
I am very pleased to issue a message on the occasion of the Twenty-third anniversary of SAARC Charter Day.

SAARC, since its inception in 1985, has moved forward steadily to reach its current level of progress, creating institutions and mechanisms to promote regional development. The main objectives of SAARC involve the promotion of welfare of the people of South Asia and improvement of their quality of life. It is important that SAARC Member States work with firm resolve towards creating greater awareness among the general public on the mutuality of interests which is vital for successful regional cooperation. Stressing the importance of people participation in SAARC, President Mahinda Rajapaksa urged at the Fifteenth SAARC Summit held in Colombo in August 2008 that SAARC be given “a truly people-centred focus through all its programmes and mechanisms. It is then that SAARC can become the robust Partnership for Growth for all our People.”
